Much like sharing foods, but without having to go into all the details of agriculture and cuisine :) So it makes sense to me that the beverages of choice would signal something about the one choosing, or the one not given a choice. In that light, the coffee in the Solar Clipper books really is the community badge, and Ishmael's experience with it really does signal/foreshadow much that happens later.
